More community organisations have been awarded grants to help them tackle crime.

The Prince’s Trust, Rother Neighbourhood Watch and Hastings Street Pastors are three of 11 groups to be given money from the Police & Crime Commissioner’s (PCC)Safer in Sussex Community Fund.

Hastings Street Pastors received almost £5,000, Rother Neighbourhood Watch, £4,880 and The Prince’s Trust, was handed £15,000.

In June GIZMO Children and Young Person’s Charity, which runs activities for those from aged five to 25, was awarded £4,940.

Since the fund was launched last December more than 100 applications have been submitted and more than £400,000 made available by PCC Katy Bourne to support local crime reduction and community safety initiatives.

Sussex charity abandofbrothers has been awarded a grant of £40,000 to help reduce offending by developing its mentoring services.

Nathan Roberts, co-founder, said: “We provide local adult men who want to make a difference with intensive training that develops mentoring skills, emotional intelligence and enhances confidence. This in turn empowers these men to provide training and ongoing mentorship to other young men in their communities, who have lost their way and are involved in the criminal justice system.

“Our volunteer mentors include local businessmen, tradesmen, and professionals (including police officers).

“The grant from the Safer in Sussex Fund will support our work to target those young men most at risk of offending and provide them with personal and practical support, to enable them to turn their lives around.” Mrs Bourne said: “I am delighted with the response so far to the fund, which tells me local organisations and community groups care about and are committed to helping keep Sussex safe.”
