Students are being reminded to buy a TV licence after it was announced that 30 young people were caught in Hastings and St Leonards in the past year.
More than 27,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 25 were caught watching live TV without a TV licence in the past year, according to new figures released today by TV Licensing. This includes 20 young adults in Hastings and 10 in St Leonards.
With 90 per cent of first year students under the age of 25, TV Licensing is reminding freshers they could face prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 if they are caught watching live TV, on any device, without a TV licence. Recent research by TV Licensing shows one in 10 undergraduates believe they will not get caught watching live TV without a licence, while 24 per cent think they cannot be caught watching live TV on a computer, laptop or mobile device.
Martin Dyan, spokesman for TV Licensing in London and the south east, said: “On average, students own three devices capable of streaming live TV. Watching live TV on any device is illegal, without a TV licence, and could result in prosecution and fine of up to £1,000.”
