A man has been arrested after a referee was allegedly headbutted during a county league football match in St Leonards.
The incident is alleged to have happened during a game between St Leonards Social and Hollington United on Saturday afternoon (Nov 8).
The game was being played at Tilekiln playing fields off Ingleside in St Leonards when the altercation is alleged to have occurred between a player and the referee around 2.40pm.
Hollington United were winning 2-1 at the time and the game was abandoned.
The extent of the referee’s injuries are not known.
Michelle Tugwell, spokeswoman for Sussex Police, said: “A man has been arrested after an altercation during a football match in St Leonards on Saturday (November 8).
“At around 2.40pm during a game between Hollington United vs St Leonards Social at Ingleside in Hastings. There was an altercation between the referee and a player and the referee was headbutted causing an injury to his nose.
“A 25-year-old man came to the police and was arrested on suspicion of assault. He has been bailed until November 27 while investigations continue.”
An investigation is being carried out by the Sussex County Football Association.
Ashley Slaughter, spokesman for the County FA, said: “We have received information that there was an alleged assault. We are currently investigating.
“Once we have more information we will deal with it according to the FA regulations. We need to investigate fully and it’s currently in the investigation process.”
