A Hastings teenager has been named Outstanding Young Person of the Month after raising more than £5,000 for a charity close to her heart.
Aimee Wright has spent much of her childhood raising money for Demelza, which helps look after her old brother Jordan, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
The 16-year-old, who lives in Thomas Brassey Close, has organised balloon releases, cake sales and talent contests to attract donations. She organised these events at her previous school, Helenswood Academy, and hopes to continue doing so at Bexhill College, where she currently studies.
Aimee’s mum, Sarah, said, “I’m very proud of Aimee as she started fundraising for charity when she was 12-years-old. She spoke about her brother in a school assembly and organised a special Demelza fundraising day for three years running. I’m not sure what she’ll do next - maybe an abseil or skydive.”
The Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award is sponsored by the Hastings Observer Series and Sussex Coast College Hastings.
Clive Cooke, Sussex Coast College principal, said, “I’m very impressed with Aimee’s fundraising activities. It’s admirable to see a young person devote so much time and effort to something which benefits others and her efforts are an excellent example to other young people.”
As part of her award, Aimee will receive a complimentary meal for two, and a £100 donation will be made to Demelza Hospice Care for Children.
