More than 200 dog lovers have offered to adopt the dog left abandoned at Eastbourne Railway Station last week.

Tim Whelan, of the Neighbourhood First team at Eastbourne Borough Council said the dog is ‘safe and well’ in the kennels.

But the council needs to find the dog’s owners before it will take the decision to rehome it.

“We have been inundated with very kind offers to rehome him,” said Mr Whelan.

“We’ve had 150 emails and 50 calls today offering homes.”

However, he said the council needs to contact the owners before that process takes place.

“We pick up about 200 dogs a year and 95 per cent of them are reunited with their original owners.”

He said the council needs to ensure there was not an ‘error’ such as the dog owner being taken ill.

The dog is a ‘Staffordshire bull-terrier type’, and was found at Eastbourne Railway Station on Wednesday afternoon (February 11).

A witness said he saw a man tie the dog to the railings and then get into a taxi.

Since the incident the dog has received national press attention after pictures of the incident appeared to show the dog ‘crying’ as it was abandoned.

The council has spoken to previous owners who had microchipped the dog, but they were not the owners at the time the dog appeared at the railway station.

The dog’s owner is urged to contact the council on 01323 410000.
