Police investigating floods at Hailsham school

Sussex Police has said it holding a criminal damage investigation, after a school was flooded in Hailsham today (May 12).

Grovelands Community Primary School in Dunbar Drive had to shut today, because of a “serious flood”.

It was closed yesterday because of a problem with the water supply in the town.

A Sussex Police spokesman said a call came in at 11.10am this morning from the school, after the flood was discovered.

Four taps had been left running on the first floor ofthe Year 6 area of the school, and the four plugs underneath them had been blocked.

The floods caused extensive damage at the school.

“Someone appeared to have blocked the plug holes and then started the taps running,” said the spokesman.

The incident happened some time between yesterday lunchtime (May 11), and 86.20am this morning when the floods were discovered.

East Sussex County Council said the school will remain closed tomorrow (May 13), for Reception to Year 5.

The Year 6 students are expected to attend until 11.15am.

“The school building is severely damaged following flooding ,which has affected the electricity supply,” said the council. “Everything is being done to open the school for all year groups from Thursday.”
