Hundreds of motorcyclists got their motors running to head out on the highways of East Sussex and Kent last weekend, searching for adventure at the annual Poker Run and Chase the Ace Rally.

The three-day event was the 10th Poker Run organised by The Norsemen Motor Cycle Club (MCC) Sussex. It is one of the motorcycling highlights of the area, attracting bikers from the UK and Europe and raising thousands of pounds for charity.

“As motorcyclists, we attend dozens of rallies and events throughout the year, but this is the one we look forward to the most. “It really floats our boats!”, quipped one man in a group of happy bikers.

Those taking part converged on the campsite in the village of Catsfield to kick start proceedings on Friday (June 5).

On Saturday, many revved up to take part in the Poker Run. At five designated pitstops at various locations in East Sussex and Kent participants drew a playing card to gain the five-card hand needed to play the game and be in with a chance of winning. The top three hands won cash prizes of £100, £50, and £25.

Each evening, live bands, including Skalettos plus support, Queen’s Regiment Corps Of Drums, Dead Calm, Doctor Fonda and White Coast Rebels, rounded off the days entertainment.

In addition, there was a variety of attractions for all ages, with stalls selling clothing, jewellery, bike-related articles, and refreshments. There was also the opportunity to place an order for a custom-built trike.

The Norsemen MCC, whose club house is in Hastings, is a family-orientated club that’s raised thousands of pounds for various charities with the Poker Run and Chase the Ace Rally and other events. Previous beneficiaries include the Air Ambulance, SERV (blood and organs transported by bikes) and Wealden Hospice.

Norsemen club sergeant Rick says the popularity of the Poker Run increases every year. “It has all the usual things that a rally has to offer. Good company, camping, bands, food, drink and of course lots of stunning bikes,” he said. “This year’s rally proceeds have yet to be finally calculated but will benefit the Queen’s Regimental Association – an armed forces charity centred on helping ex-servicemen and their dependents.”

Thanking everyone who helped organise and support the event, Rick says The Norsemen MCC are already preparing for 2016.

“We start planning soon after the previous rally has finished,” he said. “It’s an exhausting few days for all of our members, families and helpers but well worth the effort”.
