Residents from Lewes, Firle and Seaford joined MPs in London last week for a mass lobby on climate change.
Ten people representing organisations including the Women’s Institute, 38 Degrees and OVESCO travelled to Westminster on Wednesday, June 17 to give their views on the sensitive subject.
Lewes resident Fran Witt, who works for Christian Aid, said: “Climate change is beginning to affect so many of the things we care about, from our families to our food, to the South Downs and the sea level and white cliffs. We are concerned for our local environment but we also know climate change is affecting the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world, and we have it in our power to do something about it.We went to London to ask Maria Caulfield MP to press the UK Government to take an ambitious stand on climate change, and to lead the world in committing to low carbon development.”
Chris Rowland, director of OVESCO, said: “Scientists are clear that the world is headed towards climate catastrophe and we can’t afford to wait.
Chris Rowland, a director of sustainable energy company OVESCO, said: “The solutions to climate change are clear; politicians just need to agree to implement them. People power is the best way to force them to do it and to drown out the lobbying power of the super-rich, dirty coal and oil industries.”
Lewes MP Maria Caulfield said: “I am delighted that the lobby was a success and I was pleased to meet a number of constituents in parliament on the day to discuss the issue. Climate change is an important issue and I am pleased the Government is taking positive action on this front. The UK is taking a leading role in working towards a binding global deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit climate change.”
Thousands of people from across the country attended the lobby in the capital city.On a local level, there will be a meeting at the Linklater Pavilion on Saturday, September 26 called the ‘Lewes District 2030’ where members of the public can go and discuss important issues, including climate change.
