The Hastings & Rother branch of national charity Sustrans ran their first ‘Go Explore with Sustrans’ public cycle ride.
The event was held to celebrate the 20th birthday of the National Cycle Network which runs all the way along the South Coast of England including from Pevensey to Hastings via Cooden, which event Leader Duncan Hacon says is ideal for those wanting to enjoy a quiet route with picturesque scenery.
“The ride was held as part of National Bike Week,” he said. “Cyclists from Hastings, Battle and Bexhill rode 23 miles in a circular route from the Sovereign Light Café on Bexhill’s Western Promenade taking in the beautiful and peaceful roads in the Hooe, Pevensey Levels National Nature Reserve and Herstmonceux areas.
“A special treat was stopping in the grounds of the splendid Herstmonceux Castle for a picnic.
“It was very rewarding enabling people to go on a longer ride than they would normally have done on an unfamiliar lovely route. “One of the participants Michael French from Bexhill managed to ride up the very steep Wartling Hill for the first time ever much to his delight. This was great to see.”
