An East Sussex firefighter is seriously ill in hospital after collapsing during breathing apparatus training.
The incident happened on Thursday, June 25 during the fourth day of the course at Maresfield Training Centre. The training has been suspended while an investigation takes place.
Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, said: “Our immediate concern is with our member and his family and we are doing everything possible to provide support at this incredibly difficult time. We are of course hoping very much that he makes a full recovery and our thoughts are with him and his family. We will make every effort to reveal the circumstances of this tragic incident.”
Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the FBU confirmed the firefighter, from Rye, is still in a serious condition but is showing signs of recovery. They said: “He is still in hospital and it is still serious. He is showing some signs of recovery, however it is difficult and uncertain to say anything more at this stage. The FBU will continue to support Darren and his family in any way we can.”
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm a firefighter was taken ill while training at our Maresfield Training Centre on June 25.
“Our thoughts are with our firefighter and we are supporting his family through this difficult time.
“We are taking this matter very seriously and have set up a joint investigation with the Fire Brigades Union to investigate the circumstances of this event. No further details will be released at this stage.”
