Three Lewes students are celebrating after recently being named among the winners of the national ‘Powering Poetry’ competition by energy company E.ON.

Grace Kenthill, Luke McDonald and Keira Knight from Southover CE Primary School, Potter’s Lane, impressed the judges with their poems about how they use electricity in their lives.

They will now get to see their work in print, each receiving a copy of the compilation book made up of the 25 winning poems from pupils across the UK. They also won a set of fiction and non-fiction energy-themed books for their school.

Leanne Taylor from E.ON went along to the school to meet the pupils and congratulate them. She said, “Reading all of the entries we received, it was fascinating to see just what the term ‘energy’ means to primary schoolchildren.

“Poems were submitted on a whole range of themes - from appliances in the home to pylons, wind turbines and even to the inventors and scientists responsible for the origins of energy in all its forms.

“We know that energy can be a dry topic for young people to think about, particularly at primary school level, so we intended this competition to offer a more creative approach to the subject. Judging by the quality of entries we received, I’d say the competition has been hugely successful in engaging and inspiring young pupils.”

Steve Elliot, Head Teacher at the Lewes school, said, “The standard of the poems submitted was very high, and Grace, Luke and Keira should feel justifiably proud of their accomplishment. They worked hard to come up with the rhyming language, and in Luke’s case to compose a Haiku poem, to present the imagery of what energy means to them, and we’re delighted that their efforts have been recognised.”
