A local charcuterie has been recognised in an award ceremony dubbed the ‘Oscars of the food world’.

Beal’s Farm Charcuterie, in North Chailey, was given two gold stars at the prestigious Great Taste Awards 2015 for its special reserve coppa.

The awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink. It has been described as the ‘Oscars of the food world’ and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’. It honours food producers with three, two or one gold star, representing ‘exquisite’, ‘outstanding’ and ‘simply delicious’ respectively.

The food is blind-tasted by five expert judges to ensure a verdict from a balance of expertise, age and gender.

Beal’s Farm Charcuterie’s special reserve coppa is made using the whole neck muscle from a fully-matured, two-year-old Mangalitza, which is deep in colour, rich in flavour, with ribbons of unique creamy marbling running through.

The local business featured on BBC’s Countryfile earlier this year, showcasing its Mangalitza rare breed pig and the process of production of cured and air dried meats.

Phil Beal, owner of the business, said: “The heritage breeds are prized for their well-marbled, flavourful meat, making them perfect for cured and air dried charcuterie products.”
