The second phase of improvements to Uckfield High Street could be given the go-ahead next week.

So far the project has delivered £1m of works to the high street between Framfield Road and Bell Lane as East Sussex County Council looks to reduce traffic congestion through the town.

The next phase is for improvements north of Bell Lane as far as Church Street and ranges from introducing a 20mph speed limit, to footway resurfacing, upgrades to signal equipment and street lighting, and new street furniture.

The controversial element has been the reduction of available high street parking, as current proposals would see 23 on-street parking spaces provided with a 30-minute waiting time. Two spaces would be allocated for blue badge holders only.

However a county council report states that extra commuter parking will be delivered through Network Rail’s new 174-space car park, and improvements being made to the Luxford Fields Car Park by Wealden District Council.

It states that further work will explore establishing one-way traffic for the high street during construction and whether this should be for northbound or southbound.

The second phase of works is set to be agreed by the county council’s lead member for transport and environment on Monday September 14.

Improvements to the bus station form the third phase of the improvement project.
