Maria Caulfield, the Member of Parliament for Lewes, today gave a speech in the chamber of the House of Commons as part of the debate on assisted dying.

Maria said: “Today’s debate was very powerful, with some incredibly moving contributions from a number of MPs from all political parties.

“I fully accept that suicide, assisting or encouraging suicide, assisted dying and euthanasia are all subjects on which it is entirely possible for people to hold widely different but defensible opinions.”

The Member of Parliament for Lewes spoke of her experiences as an NHS nurse, particularly as a cancer nurse, which helped inform her thinking on this issue and led her to oppose the Bill.

Maria added: “What this debate highlighted very clearly is the importance of good palliative care and how precious our hospices are.

“This is something I will certainly be taking forward.”
