Investigations into the death of an elderly man at Seven Sisters Country Park in the early hours of this morning (Friday September 6) are continuing.
Police were called at 2.30am by the ambulance service and discovered the body of the man on a pathway leading to the sea.
A woman in her 70s, who is believed to be known to the victim, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
Acting DCI Jon Fanner, from the Major Crime Team, said: “We are appealing to anyone who was in the country park late yesterday afternoon or evening and may have seen an elderly couple behaving unusually or what would appear to be out of character.
“We also believe they were staying in Brighton so would like to hear from anyone who was on a bus travelling from the city to the Seven Sisters area and who saw an elderly couple get off at this location.
“This is clearly a very tragic case in which a man has lost his life.
“However, it is still very early into the enquiry and until we speak to the next of kin we’re unable to confirm the relationship between the two people we believe to be involved.
“We will also not speculate as to the circumstances of what happened, as this will form an integral part of our investigation.
“It is too early to know exactly what happened in the early hours of this morning but officers will continue working tirelessly to establish the circumstances leading upto this gentleman’s death.”
A post mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow (Saturday September 7) to establish how the victim died.
The car park at Exceat has been closed, along with the park to the east side of the old river meanders.
The car park at Litlington remains open, along with the park’s visitor centre.
